This Morning. Naturally.
Madalyn: When I was three I got stung by ants and you let me put my feet in the pool, mama, do you remember that?
Evan: Madalyn, I remember that happening but you were not three. (Everything happened when she “was three.”) I am insisting that you were 4.
Me: That’s a nice big word you just used, insisting.
Evan: Don’t you know I know that word? And original.
Madalyn: I know naturally. Like naturally, I sit on my bed.

Quill Pens
We’ve been studying the Dark Ages this fall. I took these about a month ago when we were studying monks and monasteries and learning how they copied literature with quill pens. I know most blogs are current and that’s what blogs are sort of about, but mine has become more like an after-the-fact scrapbook as I can’t seem to keep up anymore. I still have Sea World pictures, soccer pictures, and others I’m behind on. But I digress…
The kids really enjoyed this project. We used grape juice instead of grinding nuts into ink (we take the shortcuts.) We didn’t even soak the feathers like we were told to but they still worked beautifully.
Evan being, you know, Evan and all, couldn’t leave it at what we were doing in that moment… he’s always thinking, assessing, applying things to places outside the box… he wanted to get wax crayons and experiment that way:
They were quite amused until someone licked a finger and reminded everyone this was, in fact, grape juice they were working with, and they all began to slurp it down and enjoy a sugar high. That pretty much concluded the project for the boys but Madalyn has become quite the artist and carried on
I find doodles ALL OVER her school work now. I really should take some pictures of them as they’re intricately detailed and some just crack us up when I grade papers at night.
She was having such a good time that I let her stay at the table all of quiet time while I napped.
When I woke up, this was only part of the display I found.
Unfortunately grape juice dries VERY sticky and would’ve made a fine fruit fly amusement park so they had to be tossed. Maybe we should’ve taken the time to grind nut shells or whatever it was that I so quickly skipped over in the activity book.

Lemonade Stand
At our first garage sale.
I think Dana got better pictures the second day when I left my camera at home
so I’ll post them when she sends them… of the girls all lined up in chairs and serious about it.
